Roman Style Vestments

Venice atop the Basilica of San Marco.

1 comment:

  1. John, the vestments depicted in this mosaic are ornamented in a manner which has been a Roman Tradition for over a millenium: the TAU.

They are not, however, to be confused with the later Baroque vestments, which are smaller in all respects (not as wide, not as long) and are usually called "Roman" vestments (even though this term is a misnomer).

The vestments in the mosaic are sometimes now referred to as "Saint Philip Neri", because most depictions of the Saint shew him wearing a more ample chasuble, like this one.
