Bishops: Pose for a Formal Portrait Wearing the Biretta

1 comment:

  1. 1930's to 1950's. An auxilliary or coadjutor Bishop, most likely.. Before Vat II, only Bishops-Ordinary were allowed the mozetta. This Bishop is wearing a mantelleta, ring, biretta and pectoral cross. The only time a Bishop ordinary would NOT wear a mozetta is if he out of his diocese. After Vat II, ALL bishops (including religious orders) wear the same attire: Violet cassock, sash, skull cap, ring, biretta for "choir" dress. I don't think they even have a mantelleta, but in spite of a Vatican ban on these, many of the higher grades of minor prelates are again wearing them while Rome turns a blind eye. I have one, and my Bishop isn't concerned.
